Material-culture historian JOHN FITZHUGH MILLAR, who was educated at Harvard, the College of William Mary, and in England, has several books to his credit on architectural history, colonial ships, and historic dance. He is well known for having been responsible for building full-sized operational copies of two Revolutionary War ships for the Bicentennial, the 24-gun frigate Rose now at San Diego, and the 12-gun sloop Providence (first ship of the American Navy, first to land the Marines, and first command of John Paul Jones).
